Brees has a field day with Hawks Secondary
The New Orleans Saints is a all out passing team with great height with their wide receivers. The Saints use the passing game to set up the run game because they don't have a every down back. It was a site to see with the Hawks corners going up against Robert Meachem, Lance Moore and Marques Colston all standing 6'4" and above going up against 5'11" corners. Seattle secondary has always been small in size and that has been their biggest weakness on defense because the other teams continue to pick on Kelly Jennings and Marcus Trufant. There was countless times that Brees would throw the ball up and one of the tall receivers would go up and grab it. Now to the Hawks credit they didn't give up, they all continued to compete and give it their best. Matt had another good passing game and pretty much carried the offense with Mike Williams and the receivers getting the most attention. I'm disappointed in the run game right now because it is not doing what its suppose to do. Also the offensive line looks good with Russell Okung back at left tackle and they kept Matt up right for most of the game. It was good to see that Matt is playing well with that wrist injury and not making dumb decision with the ball. Once again Earl Thomas Jr. comes up with a interception that makes it 5 for the year. All in all this game would have been a tough one from the get go. New Orleans needed this to keep pace with Atlanta in the division and wild card spot. Every team in the NFC West lost on Sunday so the Hawks still have the lead on the division. Now this coming Sunday they have the Kansas City Chiefs coming to Qwest and they need to win this game for the fact that it's a home game and the same applies to the week after when Carolina Panthers come in. But they need to focus this week on the Chiefs and how to stop their run game with Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles. Let's go Hawks bring it home.

Tough game, huh D? Well, at least the guys gave it hell. The unfortunate side for me was that this game showed how we fare with a pretty darned good team. The Saints are by no means what they were last year, but that being said, they are still very well balanced for the most part. Being that we had a fairly decent game, it shows us just how much ground we need to make up to get back to superbowl form. I really think that peanalties and turnovers took us out of Sunday's game. Those are basic fundamental type things that can really wreak havok on a teams ability to execute and be competitive. Think back to the superbowl year. The plays, the calls, the breaks, all seemed to be going our way. I didn't see that yesterday. I'm not much for believing in luck, but luck sure seems to play a big part in beating the teams that are a little tough. Yes I just condradicted my own statement, but it is an illustration of just how many factors have to be considered in any winning season. Well, at least we still are on top of our division. It is a pleasant suprise considering what the Carrol regime has had to work with.
ReplyDeleteI want to pull my hair out with how the secondary and the running backs were playing yesterday. The Saints are gaining traction at the right time for the playoff run. By all account this was a game the Saints couldn't lose. Seattle has a long way to go to be a superior team but as long as they continue to take the division I'm fine with that until they become one of the best. Right now I label them as a average team. But what you said does play a big part of the game with the turnovers and penalties. In the end this team has to prove they can hang with the best teams and at least give them a run for their money especially on the road.
